Ski goggles: lenses explained, with picks at every price

Good goggles are the difference between seeing the bumps in flat light and skiing blind. The lens matters most. Here is how to choose, and every pair Absolute Snow has in stock, sorted by price.

How to choose

Pick the lens category for your conditions

Lenses are graded S0 to S4 by how much light they let through. S1 (43–80%) is for flat light and snow, S2 (18–43%) for mixed days, and S3 (8–18%) for bright sun. If you buy one lens, an S2 is the most versatile.

Two lenses beat one

Pairs with a spare low-light lens, or a magnetic lens system that swaps in seconds, cover both sunny and stormy days. The list below shows which include a spare lens.

Spherical or cylindrical

Spherical (curved both ways) lenses give wider vision and less distortion; cylindrical (flat vertically) lenses are cheaper and have a classic look. Both work well.

Fit with your helmet and face

The frame should sit flush with your helmet and seal on your cheeks without pressing on your nose. Glasses wearers need an OTG (over-the-glasses) frame. Small faces and children need smaller frames.

Look after the anti-fog coating

Never wipe the inside of a wet lens: shake out snow and let it dry. Keep goggles on your face or in their bag, not on your forehead, where heat fogs them.

Picks at every price

Frequently asked questions

What lens colour is best for skiing?

For flat light, yellow, rose or amber lenses (S1) add contrast. For sun, dark or mirrored S3 lenses cut glare. An S2 lens is the best single choice for mixed weather.

Are expensive ski goggles worth it?

Pricier goggles usually add better optics, wider vision, a second lens and a quick lens change. Budget pairs still protect your eyes; check they have UV protection and a double lens.
