Ski boots: flex, fit and picks at every price

Boots are the most important piece of ski equipment and the hardest to get right. Here is how flex and fit work, and every pair Absolute Snow has in stock. Have them fitted in a shop if you can.

How to choose

Flex: how stiff the boot is

The flex index is roughly 60–80 for beginners, 90–110 for intermediates and 120 or more for expert skiers (women’s boots run about 10–20 lower). Stiffer boots respond faster but are harder to drive at low speed.

Last: how wide the boot is

The last is the width at the forefoot in millimetres: about 97–98 mm is narrow, 100 mm medium and 102 mm or more wide. A boot that is too wide lets your foot move, which costs control and causes blisters.

Size by mondopoint

Ski boots are sized by foot length in centimetres (mondopoint). Stand on a piece of paper, mark heel and longest toe, and measure. Your toes should brush the front when standing straight and pull back slightly when you flex.

Walk mode and heat moulding

A walk mode frees the cuff for walking to the lift. Heat-mouldable liners and shells adapt to your feet; a bootfitter can also stretch hot spots.

Picks at every price

From the cheapest, middle and most expensive third of what’s in stock, we picked the ones with the most of the features above.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy ski boots or rent them?

Buy boots before skis. Rental boots are often packed out and generic; your own boots, properly fitted, make the biggest difference to comfort and control. Rent skis.

What flex ski boot should a beginner get?

Roughly 60–80 for beginners (50–70 for women). Softer boots are more forgiving and comfortable while you learn.
