How to choose

Mitts are warmer

Fingers together keep each other warm, so mitts are warmer than gloves. Gloves give more dexterity for buckles, zips and phones. Many skiers who feel the cold switch to mitts and don’t go back.

A membrane keeps them dry

A waterproof, breathable membrane such as GORE-TEX keeps snow out while letting sweat escape. Wet gloves are cold gloves.

Liners add flexibility

A thin liner glove under a mitt adds warmth and lets you use your phone without exposing bare skin. Bring a spare pair for long trips.

Leather lasts

Leather palms grip poles and wear well; treat them with wax to keep them waterproof.

Frequently asked questions

Are mittens or gloves warmer for skiing?

Mittens. Keeping your fingers together traps more heat. Gloves are better when you need dexterity.

How do I keep my hands warm skiing?

Wear mitts with a liner, keep your core warm, avoid gloves that are too tight, and use disposable hand warmers on very cold days.
