When do children ski free?

Many resorts let young children ski free, but the ages differ and you usually still need to collect a pass with proof of age. Saas-Fee lets children under 6 ski free, and children under 9 ski free when a parent buys a pass of six days or more with a SaastalCard. On the Mont-Blanc Unlimited pass in Chamonix, children under 5 ski free with ID. KitzSki in Kitzbühel lets infants born in 2021 or later ski free in 2026/27.

Child lift pass ages

Child and youth bands are set by each lift company and often by year of birth, not age on the day. Ski Arlberg, for example, prices children born 2011–2018 and youth born 2007–2010 separately for 2026/27, and Niseko United’s child rate covers ages 4–12. Check the bands on each resort’s lift pass page before you budget.

Ski school: book it first

Children’s group lessons fill up in school holidays. Book before you travel, check the minimum age and the meeting point, and choose accommodation and rental near that meeting point so mornings are short. Ask whether lessons include lunch and supervision, which makes a big difference to parents’ days.

Rental and clothing for children

Rent skis, boots and a helmet for children; they grow out of kit quickly. Pack mittens (warmer than gloves), spare base layers, goggles, high-factor sun cream and a neck warmer. Label everything.

Non-ski days and excursions

Plan at least one easy day off the slopes. Some excursions have age limits: the Aiguille du Midi cable car in Chamonix does not admit children under 3 and is not recommended for under-5s because of the altitude.

Choosing a family resort

Look for plenty of easy terrain near the village, a ski school meeting point close to your accommodation, short transfers from the airport and a car-free or pedestrian centre if your children are small.
